The horror of being kaddicted to a really good drama and it falls on a holiday. UGH THE AGONY!!!!! I know a bunch of you know what I am talking about. That is if you have been able to escape to your PC to check out this blog post. There is nothing worse than really really really wanting to watch a drama, but real life and family expectations come first. It is even worse than when you are sitting at your computer refreshing the page every few minutes while you sub stalk. This time, you know the show is subbed, just waiting for you to find the time to watch and squeal over all the OTP (one true pairing) cuteness. And then you finally are able to watch and realize that it will be a while before you can watch the next episode because you have to blog about the previous episode first. I know that this is kind of rambling a bit and has nothing to do with this amazing, awesome, better than a turkey dinner episode, but I am currently suffering from a turkey coma, so please give me some leeway to ramble.
Episode 5 brought out all the thrills of a show who knows it is good and is not afraid to push the boundaries (I foresee a jump into #1 in the ratings war in the near future.). This episode gave us confessions, we had sacrifices, we had a poor hot hyung who we all want to forgive for his revenge driven murder spree, even as we reel in shock that the writers brought us to that dark place in the script (especially this early in the drama). Everything was there, including the homemade whipped cream, on our special kdrama pie. It was pure perfection for this kdrama starved addict, so without any more rambling, let's jump into my favorite moments of the drama (And boy were there some big moments!)
1. Goodbye Love
Dal Po jumped off his own OTP (One True Pairing) ship this episode. Yup the boy is pretty much putting justice (I say justice since I don't think he has any thoughts of revenge similar to his brothers) and family above his own love and happiness.
A friend in one of my kdrama discussion groups was actually upset that Dal Po was not jumping into the relationship after In Ha's confession (more details on that later). But personally I think it is very logical that he does not give in to his feelings. The first obstacle to their love, and personally the lesser of the two, is her mother. Considering that Dal Po blames Mommy Witchiest for pushing his mother towards her suicide, it is a big deal for him to see past that. Especially now that his past has collided with his present and Dal Po is unable to separate the two. I love how Dal Po explains his own feelings when he said "if you become a reporter the heartache might be more than I can handle. I am afraid." The larger problem is actually one that is both a blessing and a curse. He is so interwoven emotionally with his adopted family that he can not allow himself to follow his feelings. He loves not only In Ha but also grandfather and even his adopted "brother", who we already know does not want them to be a couple. Yes, In Ha confesses but to be together they would have to destroy the family dynamic and take what comes. I don't think either is ready for that. For sure In Ah isn't. She could honestly say that she likes Dal Po, but it is not at the point of needing him (without hiccuping). Which really says something. Just because In Ha confesses doesn't take any of the problems away. The path of love is never easy... Just when one problem is resolved another emerges.
2. Toothbrush Abuse
Its funny how Korean dramas always use scenes of people brushing their teeth to set the mood. It could be cute playful couple brushing, angsty "I am all alone" brushing, or in In Ha's case the I am pissed at my uncle and these unending hiccups of unrequited interest (not at the love stage yet) brushing. I love that instead of confronting him verbally she decides to get back by using his toothbrush vigorously in the toilet. Hehehe. After leaving Dal Po's toothbrush back in its original spot she stomps off to her room, only to return in a huff when she can't stop hiccuping and grabs the dirtied utensil out of Dal Po's hand right before he used it. Phtttt. Poor thing can't even be petty, but I sure do like her chutzpah.
3. A Mother's Affection........Maybe?
What does A girl have to do to get some motherly affection around here? Mommy Wichiest continues to be a not so nice person. Is anyone really surprised? In order to boost ratings she decides to use her own daughter as a marketing ploy. I will give the mother some credit for not sugar coating the situation by pretending she suddenly wanted anything to do with In Ah. Mommy Wichiest continues to confuse us viewers since there are small (almost minuscule) signs of a human being beneath that facade. However it is almost impossible to see if that is real, or if she is just playing her daughter. The woman is an unlikable enigma.
4. WE HAVE A CONFESSION!!!
It has been so long since a confession scene really had me holding my breath and creating the super warm kdrama fuzzies. In Ha has been hiccuping for days, ever since she realized her feelings for Dal Po were more than niece like. I can just imagine that this would truly truly suck and I love that our plucky heroine tackles the problem head on. She takes Dal Po up to the rooftop intent on talking it out. Dal Po thinking this is about his betrayal during the interview is on the defensive but is shocked when instead of yelling at him, In Ha confesses that she loves him. In Ha can not see his face, but we viewers are able to see his despair as he realizes she loves him. In Ha, unaware of how her words are killing Dal Po, just quickly reassures him that her feelings will quickly fade away and that things will return to normal (she says this without hiccuping so she must truly believe it.) and walks away. Dal Po is left alone, crying (and I will admit I might have cried a tear or two as well) over the love that can never be. This scene was so well done, I have high hopes for the future confession scenes where they actually end up together. Hopefully it will be equally perfect.
5. A Families Love
The problem with confessions is that they can not be unheard and no matter how much you might want things to remain the same, it changes things. Words can never be undone nor returned (much like underwear....lol)
But for the sake of the family dynamic Dal Po eventually decides to try and make things the way they used to be before confessions and work came between them. He starts treating In Ha like the pain in the tushy younger sister and they both fight over who gets to use the restroom next, at least until dad comes out after a very stinky bathroom moment. They then start to fight over who has to use it first and Dal Po wins by shoving In Ha into the fume ridden room. It was a very sweet moment, even if it was not all lovey dovey hearts.
6. The Most Charming of Stalkers
Seo Bum Jo is so flipping ADORABLE. Who knew that a Chaebol mamma's boy could be this cute and enjoyable. I do still wish this storyline was its own drama since Bum Jo could easily be changed into a traditional rich leading man stalker, but I have become resigned to the fact that I will just have to enjoy his antics and harden my heart for his eventual heartache. Bum Jo shows us that when you are rich and have an enabling mother, no amount of sweet stalking is impossible. First he follows In Ha to her part time job where he patiently listens to her Dal Po inspired rants. Later Bum Jo uses his connections to follow his dream girl to MSC news station and be hired as an intern with In Ha. I really enjoy the concept of the two sets of interns facing off against each other. It should provide some great plot lines in the future and also is a great parallel for Dal Po and Bum Jo's fight for In Ha's love. You have to love a good correlation.
7. Choosing the Dark Side
Two brothers, raised in very different situations. One grows up thinking he is alone, but really has a new family that becomes his rock and support, while his hyung truly is alone, stewing in his bitterness over an unjust life until something snaps. It is only logical that they will each deal with the revenge concept differently. Dal Po is determined to make it as a reporter and use his real name to clear the injustice done to his father. Hottie Hyung goes in a very different direction with his revenge plans. Hottie Hyung kind of takes a giant leap to the dark side and becomes a murderer.
I have to admit that I was a little surprised at how dark our sweet brother went. Luring the warehouse worker to a deserted industrial area, Hottie Hyung sets up an Edgar Allen Poe level series of events that leads to the man falling into a uncovered manhole. Hyung then recovers the hole and places large bricks while telling the worker that he is the son of the firefighter who they besmirched. In order to get justice, he will do the same to the liar, that was done to his father. We see that there are two corpses (the bodies of the other two men who were involved in his fathers death) at the coroners, murdered. Since it is known that the leader of the liars had been fighting over money with the two friends, he will be instantly suspected in their deaths. Since head liar also disappears, he will be considered guilty and his family will be treated the same as Hyung had been treated. Yup, this storyline went from happy puppy love, to dark dangerous, super fast. But am I the only one who kind of wants to forgive Hyung for his evil killing ways and give the guy a hug?
I am so excited to watch the next episode where we start to get some good intern competition. I also hope we get some great romantic scenes and maybe some growing bromance since it looks like any bromance with Dal Po's brother is going to be a bit bittersweet.
